On Projective Completions of Affine Varieties Determined by Degree-like Functions

چکیده
We study projective completions of affine algebraic varieties which are given by filtrations, or equivalently, ‘degree like functions’ on their rings of regular functions. For a quasifinite polynomial map P (i.e. with all fibers finite) of affine varieties, we prove that there are completions of the source that do not add points at infinity for P (i.e. in the intersection of completions of the hypersurfaces corresponding to a generic fiber and determined by the component functions of P ). Moreover we show that there are ‘finite type’ completions with the latter property, determined by the maximum of a finite number of ‘semidegrees’, i.e. maps of the ring of regular functions excluding zero, into integers, which send products into sums and sums into maximas (with a possible exception when the summands have the same semidegree). We characterize the latter type completions as the ones for which the ideal of the ‘hypersurface at infinity’ is radical. Moreover, we establish a one-toone correspondence between the collection of minimal associated primes of the latter ideal and the unique minimal collection of semidegrees needed to define the corresponding degree like function. We also prove an ‘affine Bezout type’ theorem for quasifinite polynomial maps P which admit semidegrees such that corresponding completions do not add points at infinity for P .

متن کاملAlgebraic Stein Varieties
It is well-known that the associated analytic space of an affine variety defined over complex number field is Stein but the converse is not true, that is, an algebraic Stein variety is not necessarily affine. In this talk, we will give sufficient and necessary conditions for an algebraic Stein variety to be affine. One of our results is that a quasi-projective variety Y defined over complex num...
متن کاملThe automorphism group of an affine quadric
We determine the automorphism group for a large class of affine quadrics over a field, viewed as affine algebraic varieties. The proof uses a fundamental theorem of Karpenko’s in the theory of quadratic forms [13], along with some useful arguments of birational geometry. In particular, we find that the automorphism group of the n-sphere {x0 + · · · + x 2 n = 1} over the real numbers is just the...
متن کاملProjective Hulls and the Projective Gelfand Transform
We introduce the notion of a projective hull for subsets of complex projective varieties parallel to the idea of a polynomial hull in affine varieties. With this concept, a generalization of J. Wermer’s classical theorem on the hull of a curve in Cn is established in the projective setting. The projective hull is shown to have interesting properties and is related to various extremal functions ...
متن کاملOn GKM Description of the Equivariant Cohomology of Affine Flag Varieties and Affine Springer Fibers
For a projective variety endowed with a torus action, the equivariant cohomology is determined by the fixed points of codimension 1 subtori. Especially, when the fixed points of the torus are finite and fixed varieties under the action of codimension 1 subtori have dimension less than or equal to 2, equivariant cohomology can be described by discrete conditions on the pair of fixed points via G...
